Using Ozone in Aquaculture

Water quality for modern aquaculture

Aquaculture is an essential and rapidly expanding food production sector worldwide. Maintaining a stable water quality is fundamental for fish health, operational efficiency and sustainable production.
Ozone is widely applied in all modern aquaculture systems as a controlled oxidation step to improve water quality in recirculating aquaculture systems and intake water treatment.

Water quality control and oxidation performance

Ozone reduces dissolved organic matter, lowers microbial load, and improves overall water clarity. By oxidizing organic waste, metabolites and fine particles, ozonation supports more stable biological filtration and improves system transparency.
Ozone breaks down naturally into oxygen after reacting in the water. It is not a replacement for oxygen supply systems, but under controlled conditions it can support overall water stability in the production unit.

Reduction of organic load and disease pressure

In intensive aquaculture, organic accumulation and microbial growth can increase stress and disease risk. Ozone helps reduce dissolved organic carbon and suspended contaminants, supporting a cleaner production environment and more consistent water parameters.
Properly controlled ozonation does not significantly alter temperature or salinity and is applied within defined operational limits to avoid negative impacts on stock. The technology is therefore integrated carefully as part of an overall system design.

Integrated monitoring for reliable ozone performance

System control and operational integration

Effective ozone application in aquaculture requires precise monitoring and control of ozone dosage, oxidation reduction potential, and residual levels. Integration with advanced monitoring systems ensures safe and stable operation.
Through collaboration with OxyGuard’s monitoring and control equipment, Gaia can be integrated with sensors and control platforms that provide real time measurement of key water quality parameters. This allows operators to manage ozone dosing accurately and maintain optimal conditions for fish health and system performance.

With Gaia, Water ApS delivers robust ozone solutions tailored for aquaculture facilities, supporting water quality stability, operational control, and sustainable production performance in demanding environments.
