Using Ozone in drinking water

Proven oxidation for reliable drinking water treatment

Ozone is a well documented and widely applied technology in drinking water treatment. For decades, utilities around the world have used ozonation as an effective oxidation step to improve microbiological safety and enhance overall water quality.

Microbiological control and oxidation

As a strong oxidant, ozone inactivates a broad spectrum of microorganisms, including bacteria, viruses, and protozoa. In addition, it oxidizes naturally occurring substances such as iron, manganese, and dissolved organic matter, supporting downstream filtration and contributing to improved clarity and stability of the treated water.

Taste, odor, and micropollutant management

Ozonation is also applied to control taste and odor compounds and to reduce color in surface water sources. When combined with biological filtration or activated carbon, ozone can further enhance the removal of selected micropollutants and transformation products.

Integration within regulatory frameworks

Because ozone does not provide a lasting disinfectant residual in the distribution network, it is typically integrated into a multi-barrier treatment strategy. Depending on local regulatory requirements and system design, a secondary disinfectant may still be applied to ensure distribution safety.
International drinking water frameworks, including the EU Drinking Water Directive (EU) 2020/2184 and WHO Guidelines for Drinking-water Quality, emphasize risk-based approaches and multi-barrier protection. Within these frameworks, ozonation is recognized as an established and documented treatment technology when properly designed and controlled.

With Gaia, Water ApS delivers reliable ozone solutions designed to integrate seamlessly into modern drinking water facilities and support high-quality, compliant, and operationally robust treatment processes.
