Using Ozone in waste water

Safe discharge treatment with Ozone

Ozone treatment is a proven and highly effective technology for upgrading wastewater quality before discharge. As a powerful oxidant, ozone reduces pathogens and breaks down organic contaminants that conventional treatment steps may not fully remove.
The result is cleaner effluent, improved protection of receiving waters, and a resilient pathway toward meeting increasingly stringent environmental standards.

Can Ozone make a difference?

Ozone helps wastewater operators:

  • Reduce microbial load and enhance hygienic safety of the effluent
  • Break down a wide range of organic micropollutants, including many pharmaceutical compounds
  • Support compliance with the EU’s strengthened focus on micropollutant removal and downstream water quality protection
  • Future-proof facilities against tightening regulatory frameworks

A practical upgrade for modern plants

Ozone is typically implemented as an additional treatment stage following biological treatment and clarification. With proper system integration and process control, ozonation delivers measurable performance improvements without altering the plant’s core infrastructure.

With Gaia, Water ApS provides advanced ozone solutions designed to help wastewater treatment plants achieve safer discharge, reduce environmental impact, and confidently prepare for the next generation of European wastewater requirements.

Meeting future EU standards

A strong answer to the “4th treatment step”

Across Europe, wastewater policy is evolving beyond traditional treatment requirements toward advanced removal of micropollutants such as pharmaceutical residues and compounds from personal care products. The recast EU Urban Wastewater Treatment Directive (EU) 2024/3019 introduces mandatory quaternary treatment, commonly referred to as the “4th treatment step”, to address these substances more effectively.
Under the directive, large wastewater treatment plants (≥150,000 p.e.) must implement quaternary treatment in stages between 2033 and 2045. This positions advanced technologies such as ozonation as a central solution for achieving future European compliance and ensuring long-term environmental protection.

Ozonation is widely recognized as one of the most efficient advanced treatment technologies for reducing a broad spectrum of micropollutants, including pharmaceutical compounds. Depending on discharge targets and local regulatory requirements, it can be combined with downstream polishing steps such as biofiltration or activated carbon.
